Foods that Lower Cholesterol

A heart healthy diet prescribed by your medical doctor is a great way to reduce your bad cholesterol levels. Notice that the foods below do not contain a high amount of saturated fat. Most of them are fruits, vegetables, high fiber, and fish. Essentially a farmers diet.

Here is a list of foods that help lower cholesterol.

  • Barley
  • Cereals that contain psyllium or flaxseed
  • Fish - Omega 3 Fatty Acids help reduce the risk of blood clots and blood pressure. Salmon, tuna, swordfish, and trout.
  • Flaxseed
  • Folate
  • Fruits: strawberries, grapes, citrus fruits, rasberries, blueberries, applies.
  • Garlic
  • Legumes
  • Oatbran & Oatmeal: it helps lower the bad LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol. It contains soluble fiber.
  • Olive Oil: helps lower bad LDL cholesterol.
  • Plants
  • Soluble Fiber
  • Soy Protein
  • Vegetables: spinach, carrots, leeks, onion, watercress, broccoli, avocado, artichokes, cauliflower.
  • Walnuts: it helps keep blood vessels elastic is is a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
  • Whole-grain products: note that whole wheat and whole grain products are healthier than refined white products.
    *Bake, roast, or broil your food instead of frying it when possible.


    Here is a sample diet of someone trying to lower their cholesterol:

    Breakfast might be a healthy serving of oatmeal, flaxseed, a few walnuts, and fresh fruit.
    Lunch might consist of legume stew with fish or skinless chicken breast with plenty of fresh vegetables.
    Dinner might be a broield fish, vegetable salad, and walnuts for desert
